The infected state of antibiotic research

Most of us are unconcerned with the threat of bacterial infections in our daily lives.  We believe that we are fortunate enough to rely on antibiotics if we are infected.  However, our sense of comfort is naïve.  There is a surge of multidrug resistant bacteria in the world today.  For example, rates of flesh-eating bacterial infections are on the rise in hospitals across the nation.  With little effort to check the rampant growth, drug resistant bacteria appear only months after the introduction of new antibiotics.  Such an emergence is a dire public health concern that pharmaceutical companies and governments are neglecting to combat.

Regardless of how much we try to be politically correct, we always suspect that men seek beauty and women seek wealth in the dating game.  It’s evolution.  A beautiful woman is more likely to be fertile and possess good genes.  Similarly, a successful man can provide the resources necessary to raise children.  In the simplistic world of the past, such a system was helpful.  After all, when people had to hunt and farm for their own food, survival depended quite a bit on being born healthy and robust.  This evolutionary instinct survives to today.  Recent research has shown that women place importance on monetary factors, while men seek attractiveness in their partners.  In other words, the criteria for mating have not evolved.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is an X-linked genetic disorder that results from a deficiency in the nucleotide "salvage pathways."  This disease leads to multiple neurological deficiencies (most notably, mutilation), as well as gout.
