Dear Reyne, I have the most nosy lab mates. They keep track of my hours in the lab, and they are always in my business. There is endless gossip going on constantly. I am a very private person, and I hate being talked about. It’s driving me crazy. Help! Sincerely, Annoyed in a Biochemistry Lab, CA
Dear Annoyed, Your lab mates probably don’t have anything better to do. Graduate school does make it difficult for people to have well-rounded lives outside of work, so it’s not a surprise that they gossip a lot. Usually, it doesn’t mean anything. Don’t take anything personally. The most important thing is your relationship with your PI. If you’re worried about how many hours you should work, just ask her/him. The best way to keep out of gossip is to not participate in it. Don’t talk about other people, and be tight lipped about your personal life. Be friendly and polite, but choose safe topics to discuss with your lab mates (like latest scientific discoveries or current events). If you learn something about other people in the lab, keep it to yourself. Remember, you can always politely excuse yourself or look busy with work if the gossip crowd starts getting out of hand. Sincerely, Reyne |
