More civillians, including teenagers, are carrying weapons in Iraq, adding to the chaos. Sectarian Strife Fuels Gun Sales in Baghdad

Constant outbreaks of violence and general lawlessness in Iraq have made Iraqis very wary. Facing the threat of death from car bombs and shootings, Iraqis are counteracting by stocking up on firepower for personal protection. AK-47s, pistols, and grenades are among the weapons of choice for regular civilians. From 17-year-old boys to women working for the government, more people from all walks of life are carrying guns.

Although it's only legal for people over 25 to own weapons, the law is rarely enforced. Teenagers and people without permits are walking the streets blatantly displaying firepower. Regardless of your stance on gun control in the U.S., it's hard not to find the widespread proliferation of firepower in Iraq disturbing. For one thing, not many people can be trusted with an AK-47 or a grenade. Imagine a pissed off, hormonal teenager with an AK-47 parading around in public. It's a scary thought. Of course, one can't blame Iraqis for wanting weapons. In their daily lives, the peril of death is a constant companion. Owning weapons can give them a sense of security, however false it may be. In truth, it doesn't matter how many weapons they own. None of them will be safe until Iraq is unified peacefully. Who knows when that'll happen.
