Hu Jintao, the President of China arrived on the West Coast today, and is spending some time in Seattle, WA. He has met with Bill Gates and is scheduled to visit Chinatown.
Chinese President Hu Jintao began his United States visit today with a lunch at Microsoft. He is also scheduled to visit Seattle's Chinatown later today. This is just the first day of a trip that will take him across the country to meet with President Bush.
Hu Jintao was elected President of China in 2003. Before he became president he had served in critical positions within the Communist Youth League in Gansu and the CPC's Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee. Some supporters believe this experience gives him the potential to be a closet reformer in the Chinese government.
However, others believe that this is not very likely. One criticism of his time on the Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee was that he did not spend much time in Tibet, mostly due to 'altitude sickness'. Also, while in Tibet he responded to seperatist protests by declaring martial law. This set a precedent for such situations, and is believed to have influenced the handling of Tiananmen Square. Since he has taken office, he has not shown any obvious signs of changing how the country is governed.
Bush's response to the visit has been primarily to emphasize that our nation's technical skills are rapidly being overtaken by such countries as China and India, and that we must confront the challenge of such a world and educate ourselves further. It is difficult to tell, but he may just be calling all of us stupid.
