The infected state of antibiotic research

Most of us are unconcerned with the threat of bacterial infections in our daily lives. We believe that we are fortunate enough to rely on antibiotics if we are infected. However, our sense of comfort is naïve. There is a surge of multidrug resistant bacteria in the world today. For example, rates of flesh-eating bacterial infections are on the rise in hospitals across the nation. With little effort to check the rampant growth, drug resistant bacteria appear only months after the introduction of new antibiotics. Such an emergence is a dire public health concern...

Is it worth getting a PhD?

Dear Reyne, Is a PhD really worth it? I am working all the time. I am being paid barely above minimal wage. Sometimes I don’t even know if my research will get anywhere. I often ask myself, “Why did I choose this?????” Is this something that people go through and then get out of? Or is this a sign that I should quit? Sincerely,Sick of Research in an Organic Lab, CA

PI having affair with older student?

Dear Reyne, I joined a lab a few months ago. I am pretty sure that an older graduate student in my lab is having an affair with my PI. I feel uncomfortable with it. They’re pretty obvious about it sometimes when they don’t think people are watching. What should I do? Should I tell someone in the department? Is there someone I can talk to? Sincerely,Confused in a Lab, CA

An insulted woman surrounded by men

Dear Reyne, I work in a lab with all men. I am the only woman in the lab. I get along with everyone usually, and I do hangout with them after work sometimes at a bar or a restaurant. Things are usually fine, but they do say sexist things. Sometimes these sexist comments are directed at me, and I find it really insulting. I am not sure how to deal with this. Please help. Sincerely,Insulted in an Inorganic Chemistry Lab, CA
